How does it looks like
Learning how to use a kite on your feet until first attempts with equipment (skis / snwoboard) takes about 2-3 houres. After a series of exercises with the kite, if we do everything correctly, we get on the board or skis.
First, begginer is driving connected to instructor with rope, after few trials, they change – instructor is pulled by the trainee. We use radio communication for training – to have permanent communication between instructor and student.
Depending on the conditions, such as: personal ski/snowboard skills, acquiring knowledge, weather and driving conditions, learning of the base of snowkiting takes from 4 to 10 hours with an instructor.
Who can do snowkite ?
Snowkiting is the perfect sport for any skier or snowboarder who feels confident on their winter equipment and looks for something more. It is also a good first step for people who are thinking about kitesurfing on water. At the same time, for people already flying on water, we prepare training by adapting current kitesurfing skills to snowkite riding. However, kite sports at the appropriate level of advancement can be practiced by children and adults – even those who did not have anything to do with any winter sports before.
Requirements
There are no specific requirements to become a snowkiter, however being able to ski / snowboard on the edge will reduce learning time. We train children weighing about 45 kg, teenagers and adults. If you don’t know how to ski or snowboard – that’s fine – we run courses for beginners and intermediate in ON Pilsko in Korbielów.
Skis or snowboard?
It’s hard to say what is better for snowkiting. Both vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses. Usually people choose what they feel more confident about and have more experience, but new challenges can bring great satisfaction too.
Here are some informations about winter snowkiting equipment, their advantages and disadvantages.
Snowboard
When we are choosing snowboard for snowkite, special attention must be paid to the fact that we should look for symmetrical board - with the smallest possible waist - where turning ray is as large as possible. It reduces spontaneous sharpening of the board during riding alee. The length of the board is selected according to the height (as in gravity driving), but also to the style of riding we want to practice. For Race, board should be stiffer and longer than the standard board. For Freestyle we need slightly, softer one with standard length. For Freeride, it is worth to have flex above 5/10, of standard length.
Pros
Natural position
Lightness
Versatility with different snow layers
Cons
More difficult learning
Need more wind to drive
Ski
The choice of the type of skis depends on what snow and terrain we are in. The most versatile equipment for snowkiting is the Freestyle / Freeride Twin-Tip skis with medium flex. Universal widths are approx. 85mm to 100mm under the shoe. If we are interested in Race riding, we should look for a slightly narrower, but longer skis - with a large turning ray (Giant type). If snow is tight, the All-round or Carving skis will also work well.
Pros
Easier to learn
Need less wind to drive
Greater mobility on the spot
Cons
Hard boots, heavier equipment
Less natural riding position
What do I need for the course?
For Basic courses you will need your own equipment (skis or snowboard) along with boots. If you do not have the appropriate equipment, you can rent it.
For training, you should dress appropriately for the winter forecast – right thermal clothing and winter outerwear should give you freedom of movement. Decent gloves, better two pairs – adequately to the temperature. In case of snowfall, it is necessary to have gogles. Also during sunny seassion you would need tinting goggles or sunglasses.
we ride on foil kites
We do trainings with open and closed – cell kites, which are characterized by easy independent start and landing. The basic structures are closed-cell kites – for beginners and one-skin kites – Single Skin, from renowned brands Flysurfer and Ozone. Single Skins flys in light and medium winds and can forgive many beginners’ mistakes. That makes trainings more pleasent and, above all, safe for the student.
